Welcome…and sex…

Well, here it is. My blog. This is a random collection of thoughts that aren’t quite usable in my actual writing, but I have to store them somewhere or they will make my brain explode. Sometimes they’re funny, sometimes they’re poignant, often they’re just gonna be weird. Tonight it’s about sex.

Last night my friend and I were talking about clothes, and she made the comment that she doesn’t see any reason to dress anything short of dead sexy. I said, “Well, some people will think you’re a slut.” She said, “Yeah? So what? How does it affect me if they do?”

I had to think about that one for a minute. She went on: “Besides, why is it any of their business if I am a slut? How does that affect them any way? Why they hell should they care?”

I still don’t have an answer for that. What difference does it make? I mean, sure, back when all property passed through the male line, paternity was a problem. But now…now we uppity women are allowed to own property, to have our own incomes, to even have kids without being married. So who cares? And honestly, if parternity is a problem, DNA testing solves it. STDs? Okay, safe sex then.

Why can does society have such a hard time accepting the reality that females are sexual beings? Why is women’s sexuality so frightening, so threatening that it has to be suppressed?

And in the US, I think it’s even worse. We have to be attractive, but not too attractive; we have to be pretty and desirable and yet somehow never project any hint that we actually put out. We have to be friendly and admiring, but we can’t be a tease, either. Shit. It would be a lot less confusing to be handed a berka at the age of 10.

My friend and I suspect that being denied their identity as sexual beings leaves a gap in women’s lives, and they turn to material things to try to fill the hole. There’s a gaping void in our souls and we’re trying to fill it with shoes.
