The following are excerpts from the fragmentary “Book of Motoronomy,” one of the scrolls recently discovered in Qumran:
…And the Lord answered him, “All the creatures that crawl {roll?} on the earth are mine, whether their wheels be two or four or eight or more. But climb thou not into a cart of six wheels, for they are unclean.”
“I have laid paths for you to follow, and lo, take care to follow in the paths of the Lord. Move from path to path if you must, but take no joy in it, for the paths of the Lord are wise and will grant long life. Cross not the the yellow path, for you shall surely die.”
“I have placed among you angels of mercy to aid you in times of tribulation, and by this may you know them: they carry a swirling a pillar of fire and sing loudly the Lord’s praises. Take heed and give way to my angels. And any man who shows not respect for my angels and thereby causes suffering unto his neighbor shall be punished thusly: his property shall be set aflame, and his own cart shall be put across the road, that no angel may come to his aid. And thus are the wicked instructed in the ways of the Lord’s justice.”
“If thy neighbor seeks to move into the path in front of you, and lights the Lord’s lamp in supplication, do thou honor lamp and make room for him. For any who seek to enter the path of the Lord with humility and penitence shall be welcome. Woe to those who block the Lord’s path and let no man enter, for they are an abomination in my sight.”
“Blessed are they who render aid to their neighbors along the path of the Lord. They shall be rewarded with riches and happiness all the days of their lives.”
“You shall follow the paths of the Lord with all your heart, mind, and attention. Whilst you travel the path of the Lord, talk not to thy neighbor on thy portable burning bush, paint not thy face as the Babyonian harlots do, indulge not in gluttony, and hide not thy face amongst thy scrolls. For such things are evil in my sight, and will be punished with fire and brimstone.”
“Remember to keep holy the passing lane.”
