You know, I can’t do the whole political commentary thing correctly. I keep ending up with poetry and fiction instead of expository or argumentative essays.
Well, fine. I can live with that.
I don’t know if this one needs a title or not. It might need footnotes…
Too long has Themis wept;
Too long the twin ravages–
Hubris and greed–
Have silenced her complaints,
Torn away her naked breast,
And disguised their crimes as virtue.
Too long has Justice, patient and wise,
Pleaded with the unmerciful,
Reasoned with the unreasonable,
Tried to show the cave-tied blind.
But no more.
Nemesis hears her sister’s cries,
And pleads her case before the gods.
“Let Sweet Eirene stand aside:
Where Justice weeps, Peace can’t abide.”
Immortal Zeus denies her not.
He calls his children to her side
And bids them do her will.
Gladly do his children comply,
As they, too, have un-met wrongs.
Apollon’s shining light of truth
Too long dimmed with soiling lies,
And his greatest gift to man
Twisted into tortured evil.
Athena, too, he summons forth,
And eagerly she answers him,
Her breastplate long since polished
By unheard cries of aggrieved men.
Long has wisdom stayed her hand
In the hopes that Themis might prevail,
But no more.
Lay your lyre by, Apollon!
String your bow, Far-shooting son,
No more let liars swear their vows,
No longer broken oaths allow.
Undo the gains foul evil won.
Redress these wrongs so boldly done.
Parthenos! Take up your spear
And make the pompous quake in fear. .
Strengthen all who Justice seek,
Behind your shield protect the meek.
And lead those souls to righteous war
Who dare to stand and say “No more.”
