As our national election approaches and the rhetoric intensifies,
anger and fear threaten to override wisdom and civility: there
are already accusations of fraud in Arizona, Ohio, and Florida,
and reports of vandalism of campaign headquarters are increasing.
While we work for our candidates, let us please also pray that
partisan enthusiasm doesn’t devolve into fraud or violence. Here
is the prayer that I’ve written for this purpose:
——————
A Prayer for Our Country
Dorothy Lindman
We pray that you aid our country in its time of turmoil and confusion.
Let truth prevail against fear, anger, and distortion.
Grant us a fair and honest election that results in a government
–dedicated to the welfare of the people of the United States
–that provides all its citizens justice, freedom of speech,
free exercise of religion, and all other Constitutional rights
–that deals fairly and honestly with other nations and its citizens
Inspire the hearts and minds of our elected leaders when they raise their
hands and swear a sacred oath to defend the Constitution: make them fully
aware of the responsibility they undertake. Guide them with the light of
wisdom.
(If you like chants, the following has a good meter, and it would be good to
march or dance to, too.
Wisdom! Justice! Honesty! Truth!)
——————-
If you agree with this sentiment, please circulate this and encourage others
to pass it around as well. Some of us will be doing a group prayer at 10 pm
EST on the following dates:
October 13
October 27
November 1.
It would be great to get as many groups as possible praying for a fair
election at the same time, or at least get as many groups as possible to
include this prayer in their services between now and the election.
