Hump or Death?

Okay, so suppose science found a vaccine that would prevent nearly all cases of cervical cancer in women. Sounds like a good thing, right?

Well, there’s a problem. See, cervical cancer is caused by HPV, a virus transmitted sexually by skin-to-skin (rather than fluid) contact. And, well, if you vaccinate girls against a sexually transmitted disease, then they might (gasp!) have sex:

In the US, for instance, religious groups are gearing up to oppose vaccination, despite a survey showing 80 per cent of parents favour vaccinating their daughters. “Abstinence is the best way to prevent HPV,” says Bridget Maher of the Family Research Council, a leading Christian lobby group that has made much of the fact that, because it can spread by skin contact, condoms are not as effective against HPV as they are against other viruses such as HIV. See, the other problem is this: abstinence-only groups LIKE to have HPV around as a scare tactic. They like the idea of an STD that condoms are not a “sure bet” against. They like to have infertility, condyloma, and cervical cancer as weapons in their “SEX IS EVIL!” arsenal.

Let me put this in perspective:

HPV is extremely common. Half of all sexually active women between 18 and 22 in the US are infected. Most cases clear up, but sometimes infection persists and can cause cancer decades later.

We now have a vaccine that will prevent a potentially deadly disease that exists in 50% of women between 18-22. But if we use this vaccine, see, then the little sluts won’t get what’s coming to them. Never mind that at least some of the little sluts probably got the disease from their perverted fathers, wandering husbands, or over-forceful male acquaintances. Nope. They weren’t wearing the chastity belt, so they deserve whatever they get.

My favoroite quote on this was on Daily Kos: Give these people a choice between sex and death, and they choose death every time.
