Panel One
At the police precinct the following morning: BETH is at her desk. Detective Sergeant DAVE LeMire comes up to her; he is holding a file folder. BETH is somewhat nervous: she is “the new kid” around here, she is the first female detective, and she thinks she is in trouble.
1. DAVE: Hey, McNulty, did you run a background check on a Scott Harkness?
2. BETH: Uh...yeah...I...thought he might have something to do with the Weston kid’s death.
Panel Two
DAVE tosses the folder onto BETH’s desk.
3. BETH: It was just a hunch--
4. DAVE: Well it was a good one. Mr. Harkness and two of his friends came in last night and confessed.
Panel Three
Confused and surprised, BETH picks up the folder.
5. BETH: My god--Mike was right...and I didn’t believe him.
6. DAVE: Mike?
7. BETH: The attending physician. It was his hunch, not mine.
Panel Four
BETH starts to read the file.
8. DAVE: Maybe you should trust your friend’s instincts a little more.
9. BETH: You’re probably right about--
Panel Five
BETH spots something in the file that disturbs her deeply. DAVE thinks it’s nothing.
10. BETH: Wait a minute. It says here that they claimed some *monster* attacked them?
11. DAVE: So? They were half drunk when they came in, probably looking to cop a plea, too.
Panel Six
Close on BETH: As she reads the file, she becomes even more disturbed.
12. BETH (thought): “...like a cross between a person and some animal...Yeah, like the wolfman or something...”
13. BETH (thought): I’ve heard this story before....
